Today at the library, I saw a boy (maybe about 8 years old) and his mom go up to the librarian. The mom looked at her son (seemed like they had a discussion about what they were going to ask the librarian beforehand) and the boy started talking to the librarian. He said, "Do you know where _____ (name of book) is?" Right after the boy said that, the mom said to her son, "That's not the proper way to ask. You should ask, 'Would you please help me find _____.'"

I think some parents in the US try to make their kids independent and encourage their kids to communicate to others properly at a very young age. Of course, there are a wide variety of parenting styles (some are very laid back while others are very hands-on), but in general, I think some kids in the US have very proper manners.
