最近、息子の幼稚園選びで色々な学校情報を調べてます。
で、STEM 教育をすごくアピールする学校が増えてるな〜と感じる今日この頃。
Recently, I'm doing a lot of research on preschools for my son.
And noticed that there's so much schools that emphasize their STEM efforts. 

STEMとは、
Science （科学）
Technology（技術）
Engineering （工学）
Mathematics （数学）

を重点にした教育方針。
STEM is an acryonym that stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

前オバマ大統領が優先課題としてSTEMを取り上げたことがきっかけで注目されるようになったと言われてます。科学技術分野の教育に取り組むことで、子供達が世界でリーダーとして、活躍できることを目標としています。
Former President Obama introduced the importance of STEM education and this started the STEM education trend. By incorporating the the STEM fields into the education system, children are thought to be better prepared to become tomorrow's leaders.

STEMを通して、判断力、問題解決力、創造力の能力を高めていくことができます。「自分で学ぶ能力を養う」ことができる。今の時代の子供達、頑張り次第で、すごい大人になりそうですね。
Through STEM, it's said that children can enhance their decision-making skills, problem-solving skills, and creativity. Children acquire a passion for learning. With so much opportunities for children in our modern day society like this, I wonder what kind of adults these children will become. 

アメリカでは、STEM系のイベントも良くあります。
で、この間、子供達を連れて行ってきました。ちょっとした無料イベントでしたが、思っていた以上に子供達には良い刺激になったかも？
In the US, there are many STEM-related events and activities. 
The other day, the kids and I went to one. It was a free local event, but my kids seems to have enjoyed it more than I expected. 
プログラミングで物を操作、科学実験、風車作り、厚紙・ダンボールで街作り、色々な体験ができました。
We were able to do programming, science experiments, make paper windmills, make a city out of paper scraps/cardboard, etc.

２０２０年、プログラミング教育が日本の小学校で必修化するそうですね！アメリカと日本のプログラミング教育も違うんだろうな〜。
From 2020, Japan will make computer programming compulsory at all public schools. It'll be interesting to see the differences in programming education in the US and Japan.

２週間の春休みが終わりました！
Our two-week long spring break is over! 

娘は、学校に行くのを楽しみにしてます。普段会えないお友達と一緒に遊べるから楽しみなんだとか。私は。。。ちょっと寂しいかも。
My daughter is looking forward to going to school. She says she's looking forward to playing with classmates who she usually doesn't hang out with outside of school. I'm feeling a little sad though. 

今年の春休みは、我が家で英語キャンプを４回開催し、私と子供たちだけで２泊３日の車旅行をしました。イベント盛りだくさんの休みでした！
During this spring break, I had 4 spring break camps at my house and also went on a 2 nights and 3 days road trip with just my kids. It was a fun-filled break. 

英語キャンプでは、いろんな子供達とアクティビティーができて、面白かった。
今回やったアクティビティーを紹介したいと思います！良かったらご家庭でもやってみてください。
At my English camps, there were lots of different kids and we did so many activities. It was a lot of fun! Here are some of the activities that we did. You could also try them at home! 

食紅とホイップ・クリーム（Cool Whipは、もう甘くしてあるアメリカのホイップ・クリームです）で卵（ゆで卵）の色付けしてみました。
We used food coloring and Cool Whip to color these hard-boiled eggs.

子供達の作品。これを元気いっぱいなボーイズと作ったのですが。。。反省。I like messy! と言いながら、色付けをする少年たち。食紅は、危険！カーペットが青くなってしまいました。カーペット、ごめんなさい！
Made by the kids. I had a lot of energetic boys on this day and we made these, but I learned an important lesson from this activity...The boys were saying, "I like messy!" while coloring the eggs. Food coloring and carpet don't go well together...My carpet now has blue spots.

また今回もプラ板でネックレス！
Made plastic shrink wrap necklaces again! 

ホットサンド作り。
Made hot sandwiches! 
マシュマロと爪楊枝でエンジニアになった気分。
Become an engineer using marshmallows and toothpicks. 

立体的なオブジェを最初に作りはじめたのは、なんと最年少の男の子。面白い！
The first person to make a 3D object was a boy who was the youngest in the group. Interesting! 

ティッシュ・ペーパーとコンタクト・ペーパーを使った凧の飾り。
Made kite suncatchers using tissue paper and contact paper.

スライム作り。材料は、液体のり、コンタクト液、重曹のみ。簡単です！
Made slime! All you need is liquid glue, contact lens solution, and baking soda. It's quite simple!

種蒔きしてみました。娘が蒔いた種から昨日、芽が出てきました！
We planted seeds. I saw a sprout beginning to appear yesterday from my daughter's container. 

バナナ・マフィン。ちょっとだけチョコチップも入れてみた。これは、甘すぎず、しっとりしてておいしかった！
Banana maffins. We also put in just a tiny bit of chocolate chips. It was pretty good! Not too sweet and super moist.

バス・ボム作り。必要な材料は、こんな感じ。

子供達に香りと色を選んでもらいました。香りは、いちごとチョコレート♫
型に入れてから１０分ほど置いてから型から外すのがおすすめ。
I let the kids choose the colors and scents. For the scent, we used strawberry and chocolate. I would recommend taking the bath bombs out of the molds after 10 minutes. 


ビンゴ遊び。これは、楽しい！！子供達も夢中になります。このくるくる回すのも楽しいんだよね。息子、手伝ってくれてるつもり（笑）
Bingo! This was really fun and the kids really got into this game. It's also fun just spinning the handle to this cage. My son is trying to help.

RAFT とは、Resource Area for Teachingの略で、教育者たちが高いクオリティーの教育を子供たちに与えられるようなサービスを提供しているNPO団体です。
RAFT stands for Resource Area for Teaching and it's a NPO that provides services so that educators can provide high quality education to children. 

先日、RAFTのお店（会員制）に行ってきました！
そこでは、クラフト用品、企業が寄付してしたパーツ（オフィス用品、イベントで残ってしまったグッズなど）を売っていたり、そのパーツを使った算数・理科のキットを販売してます。
I went to the RAFT store the other day. 
At the store, they sell craft supplies, parts (like office supplies and leftover goods from an event) that companies donated and also sell math and science kits using those parts. 

実は、会計事務所で働いていた時に年に１回、ボランティアの日があり、ここでボランティアをしてました。キット作りとそのキットの作り方のビデオ作成をしたり。もう７年前のことですが、すごく楽しかったのを今でも覚えています。
When I was working at an accounting firm, we had a company-wide volunteer day every year and I used to volunteer here. I used to make the kits and also the how-to videos for the kits. This was 7 years ago, but I still remember how much fun I had! 

その他にも型抜きの機械、ラミネーターなどの機械が置いてあるので、ここで先生たちは、レッスン・プランの準備をすることができます。
Other than the parts, there's die-cutting machines and laminating machines available for use, so teachers can prepare their lesson plans. 

コーヒー、おやつも置いてあり、本当に何時間でもいられます！
They even have coffee and snacks, so really, you could spend hours here!

我が家で開催する子供向けのキャンプや英語レッスンに使えそうなものを大量購入！使うのが楽しみです。
I bought quite a few things that I can maybe use for the English camps and lessons held at my house. Looking forward to using these things!
