We can buy tofu at a regular grocery store in the US. It's a food high in protein and low in fat, so it's popular among people in the US who are health conscious.

But I think Japanese people will look at tofus in the US and be puzzled

It's good for more than a month.
I bought tofu at Whole Foods the other day and the expiration date is...January 12, 2018!
It's okay for more than 2 months!

Why do tofus last so long?
Simply put, tofus sold in the US are made differently from tofus in Japan. In Japan, soy milk is heated after bittern (nigari) is added, then poured into a mold. Once it's cooled and hardened, then it's cut and packaged. Contamination may occur during this process. The tofus in the US also are made by starting off with soy milk and bittern (nigari), but then they are packaged before it's heated. Once it's packaged, it's heated, cooled, and then hardened. Bacteria is killed off by heat during the process and there are no opportunities for bacteria to enter. So that's why tofus in the US may last for more than half a year.

How interesting!

Wildwood Organic Tofu (Made from Sprouted Soy Beans)。
Just FYI, this is one of my favorite tofus!
Wildwood Organic Tofu (made from Sprouted Soy Beans).
It's sold at Whole Foods for a little over $2, so it's almost the same price as buying regular tofu. It's made from sprouted tofu! The taste and texture is just like any silken tofu.

型に流し込む poured into a mold
雑菌 bacteria
半年以上保存期間を持つ、半年以上持つ last for more than half a year

For some years now, we've frequently heard people use the phrase XX parents.

According to this US article, there are 8 types of parenting styles.

“Cafemom”「8 Types of Moms: Which One Are You?」

1. Tiger Mother/Tiger Mom(タイガー・マザー/タイガー・マム)

2. Wolf Dad(ウルフ・ダッド)

3. Panda Dad(パンダ・ダッド)

4. Helicopter Parent(ヘリコプター・ペアレント)

5. Lawnmower Parent(芝刈りペアレント)
Lawnmower Parent(ローンモーワー・ペアレント=芝刈りペアレント)、面白いネーミング!

6. Free-Range Parent(放し飼いペアレント)

7. Attachment Parent(アタッチメント・ペアレント)
子供とのAttachment(愛着)を大事にする親のことをいいます。

8. Dragon Mom(ドラゴン・マム)
Dragon MomとはEmily Rappのエッセイ 『parenting a little boy with a fatal illness』の言葉です。

Baby food section at Babies R Us.

In the US, infants start solids when they're 4-6 months old.

The first food that is introduced to the infant is referred to as 'first food.'
Rice cereal is commonly introduced as the baby's first food.
Other common foods are apples, bananas, avocados, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. It's not that different from what babies eat in Japan.

Baby food is sold in three different forms - glass bottles, plastic containers, and pouches.

IMG_0144

I think pouches are the most popoular. Pouches are so convenient when you're on-the-go because you don't need a spoon, it's light-weight, and you don't have to worry about any spills. Babies like it too because they can feed themselves by just sucking on the pouch.

In the US, it's not too difficult to find organic products and the same goes for baby food, too. Many pouches aren't only organic, but are packed with nutrients that the baby needs for his/her growth. For babies that are in the mid or later stages of baby food, pouches contain a variety of fruits, veggies, grains, meat, and fish.

Superfoods such as kale, quinoa, amaranth, chia seeds are often listed as one of the ingredients used in pouches. People in the US eat superfoods from when they're infants! But at the same time, the US is also a country with a high obesity rate.

My son was crying often during the night, which is rare for him...thanks to him, the whole family is sleep deprived. Well, let's face it. If you have kids, it's normal to have days like this.

How do you say, 'yonaki' in English?

Well, there isn't any word that describes 'yonaki' in English.

My baby cries often during the night.

What? Why? So, do American babies not cry? Of course, that's not true. If I start to explain about this in detail, it's going to take a long time, so...please look forward to reading part 2 on this topic!

It's hard to deal with a crying baby at night, but making your child go to sleep is also difficult.

At our house, we use this sleep sheep. It's popular in the US and I bought it for my youngest child. When you turn it on, you can hear soothing sounds (waves, rain, etc.) and it's great for putting your child to sleep. When my first child was born, I thought I didn't need any special baby products, but I bought this this time around in order to make my child-rearing job a little easier. Of course this may or may not work for your child, but in at our house, this was a great buy.

彼のお蔭で = thanks to him
寝不足 = sleep deprived

This time, I'm talking about a topic related to US culture. It's my first time doing a video on something other than songs or craft. While taking the video, my son interrupts and makes the room messy, so things didn't go as smoothly as planned.

Oh, well. That's just how life is.

I'm not saying all kids in the US love veggies.
But there are a good amount of kids around me that do eat raw veggies as a snack.

Even if it isn't veggies, kids might eat fruits, nuts, dried fruits, string cheese, etc. for their snack. Of course, there are kids who eat candy every day for their snack.

People might think I'm crazy, but I think raw veggies taste good. Especially sugar snap peas and cauliflower. It tastes great with hummus. There's only one veggie that I don't feel like eating raw and that's broccoli.

You can get more nutrients by eating raw veggies and save time. But, it does lower your body temperature, so moderation is key.

部屋を散らかす= make the room messy
栄養が摂れる=get more nutrients
