American food is usually not that great, but how about American emergency food

I received some emergency food packets from my friend, so tried some! There are many companies in the US that prepare emergency food packets. I browsed through what kind of products are available and it seems like many meals have pasta that's tomato or cheese-flavor or other food that may cause heartburn for Japanese people.

This is what I received from my friend. Inside a clear bag, there was pasta, rice, cookie, and lemon-lime juice (powder). Lemon-lime flavor?! Can't imagine it would be good, so I threw that away.

Cheese tortellini and mexican rice. Both are tomato-flavored. I guess Americans like tomato-flavored things?

Cookies and crackers.

Now, the taste test! How do these taste?

Not bad!?

I was so surprised! I feel like it tastes really similar to frozen food. Of course, I don't think frozen food tastes fantastic, but it's not bad. But if I had the option between this emergency food and a plain cracker...I would probably choose the cracker.

In continuation to my last post, here's another post about pesticide use in the US. If you have kids, the choices we make with regards to food is something we want to be careful about. But if we become overly-concerned about it, then it'll just cause stress. The important thing is to enjoy learning and incorporating healthy food choices.

So let's talk about the Clean 15.

In the US, the 15 fruits and vegetables that relatively have no or only a small amount of pesticide residue are referred to as the 'clean 15.'

Organic produce is a little more expensive than those that aren't.
For the produce listed in the Clean 15, I don't think it's necessary to be strict about choosing organic.

Fruits and vegetables with thick outer skin or those with multiple outer layers (such as onions and cabbage) are listed in the Clean 15. We don't eat the outer parts of these vegetables and fruits, so it's sort of common sense that these fruits and vegetables are selected.

2. Sweet Corn(トウモロコシ)
3. Pineapples(パイナップル)
4. Cabbage(キャベツ)
5. Sweet peas frozen(えんどう豆)
6. Onions (玉ねぎ)
7. Asparagus(アスパラガス)
8. Mangos(マンゴー)
9. Papayas(パパイヤ)
10. Kiwi(キウイ)
11. Eggplant(ナス)
12. Honeydew Melon (ハネデューメロン)
13. Grapefruit(グレープフルーツ)
14. Cantaloupe(メロン)
15. Cauliflower(カリフラワー)

Dirty Dozen
Have you every heard of the phrase, 'Dirty Dozen'?

If you've never heard of this word, you'll probably be confused...
I think health-conscious people in the US would know what this phrase means.

Dirty Dozen is a list of 12 fruits and vegetables that not only use a considerable amount of pesticides, but the amount of pesticide residue is high, and therefore, is considered to be 'dirty.'

It would be great if we could all choose organic for these fruits and vegetables.

In the US, perhaps because people are more health-conscious, but it's easy to find organic fruits and vegetables. At Costco, I buy organic berries, and at Trader Joe's, I buy organic apples, celery, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, and spinach. The prices are reasonable, so it's possible to continue this lifestyle.
