I'm sure you've seen the stickers that are attached to veggies and fruits sold in the US.
These small, round stickers display the product's PLU (product lookup number) code.

But these stickers have another meaning.

You can classify the PLUs into 3 categories:
4 digit PLUs with numbers in the 3000s and 4000s range - produce was grown conventionally or “traditionally” with the use of pesticides.
5 digit PLUs with numbers starting from 8 - genetically modified vegetable or fruit
5 digit PLUs with numbers starting from 9 - grown organically and is not genetically modified

In Japan, labeling is required by law for products that are genetically modified. Of course, there seems to be loopholes to the law. In the US, GMO labeling is not mandatory.

So, when you do buy vegetables and fruits in the US, please take a look at the sticker. It's best to avoid produce that start with a 8, since it's GMO. Of course, organic produce is the safest, but there's really no need to be too strict about choosing organic for some produce such as bananas and avocados.

Let's be smart shoppers!
