Recently, there's a lot of produce and restaurant food delivery services. Before, I thought these kinds of services were expensive, but it's actually pretty reasonable now. Our lives have become so much more convenient!

The other day, I signed-up for a organic veggies and fruits delivery service called Imperfect Produce. This company delivers organic veggies and fruits that can't be sold at normal grocery stores because of their shape, size, etc.

For your first delivery, if you use a discount code, you can get free shipping. So I paid $22 for this delivery. For a family of 4, these fruits and veggies will probably be 2 or 3 days worth. It's not super cheap, but it's fresher than the organic produce at the store and it's the same quality as what you would get at the farmer's market. All the items are directly put inside a cardboard box, so the only thing to dispose is the cardboard box. And you don't have to go shopping!

But there's one thing that was a little disappointing this time...

You should be able to see what you're getting a few days before the delivery and customize your order, but I couldn't figure that part out.

As a result, I got items like artichokes and mint, which I don't normally use.

And potatoes and carrots, which aren't our family's favorites.

So I thought I have to go 'American' style and I contacted the company and wrote to them about this. I got a response and they credited $5 towards my next delivery.

Their service is great, so I'll occassionally use this service.

Mexican food isn't all about beans, cheese, and meat :)

My friend taught us how to make Mexican food the other day. My friend is Japanese, but her husband is Mexican.

This time, my friend taught us how to make tortillas (both corn and flour), nopal salad, pickled onions, guacamole, jicama salad, and three different types of salsa. For the nopal salad, all my friend did was boil the nopal in salt water for about 20 minutes. It's a little slimy and has a crunchy texture. It was so good! And for the guacamole, if you put the avocado pit in the middle of the guacamole, it prevents it from turning brown. Give it a try!

And the husband of my friend who hosted this cooking party grilled meat using his barbecue grill. We wrapped the meat in the tortilla.

We were able to try three different salsas! So surprised by the different varieties of jalapenos.

I think of loads of cheese and beans when someone mentions Mexican food, but there are other foods, too! It can actually be pretty healthy.

Rolling out the tortilla dough was really fun. You have to roll it really thin. Store-bought tortillas have preservatives to prevent it from going bad quickly, but real tortillas only use simple ingredients - bread flour, warm water, baking powder, olive oil, and salt.

With the leftover tortillas, my friend suggested wrapping the tortilla with scrambled egg and avocado for breakfast. I added steamed broccoli and cheese to it for our breakfast.

We are so lucky to be living here and getting to be friends with people from all over the world.

This is toy capsule vending machines in the US. It's not that appealing to me...
This is at Toys R Us, but this store is closing forever on April 15th. So it sort of crowded with people both buying make making returns.

When I go back to Japan, I'm always amazed by the quality of the toy capsule vending machines. It makes me want to collect these toys.

And in Japan, you see these machines in many places.
In the US, I do see these machines, but not everywhere like Japan.
And I feel there aren't as many people who collect these toys.

vending-machine-ninja-toys

The quality...is also poor. Bouncy balls are probably one of the good toys. There's weird-looking figures.

But did you know? Toy capsule vending machines were first invented in the US and then exported to Japan?

20180317_130546

My daughter graduated from first grade yesterday at her Japanese school.
She said she wanted to buy something from the toy capsule vending machine, so I told her, "Sure." Then, she brought her wallet. I was going to buy it for her as a reward, but she told me that she wants to use her own money. So mature. She even bought her brother a toy with her own money!

I wonder why are toy capsule vending machines so old and have toys that are not so attractive?
But these are so different from the ones in Japan, so it might be fun to buy a few as a present for people in Japan?!
